| Miss Mary's Class | | Miss Mary has been a special education teacher for over 20 years.
She began as a First Grade teacher while working on her graduate
degrees in special education and administration. She loves her
students. And teachers always refer to their students as "their
kids!"
The special education DCD students are from kindergarden to grade 6.
Part of the day is spent in the regular education classroom with and
without help from the special education staff. Part of the day
is spent in the special education room.
Basic reading, math, writing, language, behavior, and functional skills
are practiced in the special education room and regular education
classroom. These are the goals and objectives written on the IEP
(Individual Education Plan) that each special education student has.
In the special education room many functional skills are practiced
daily from kindergarten to 6th grade (depending on the skill and
ability level of each student). Such as: calendar, cooking,
cleaning, self care, helping younger students, jobs, responsibility for
belongings, and independence.
Fun hands on materials, activities, and games are used in the special education room to practice
thematic topics being learned in the regular education classroom.
Such as: solar system, volcanoes and ancient civilizations, weather,
moon phases, the human body, insects and butterflies, birds and eggs, health, and physical exercise.
