Principal’s Message for North End Elementary Hamilton E. Bell
As a principal, I could not ask for a better community to work with than North End Elementary. This is my third year at North End, and I am very excited to be a part of the implementation of the new programs and initiatives that we are launching this year. University Academies for Boys and Girls at North End Elementary is a Pre-K through 6th grade program that emphasizes preparing urban learners to succeed at the college or university level, and thus properly positioning them to become our Nation’s future leaders. Our mission is to provide opportunities for our students to become future leaders by developing meaningful, respectful relationships through life long learning skills. The school's core belief is that every student has the ability to learn when given the opportunity.
The opportunities to increase learning at North End comes through a thorough list of extended programs. North End will implement Readers Workshop in 2009-2010. Through ‘Readers Workshop’ 90 minutes each day will be devoted to individualized reading instruction. The ‘Everyday Math’ curriculum teaches math for a minimum of 60 minutes, with many classrooms providing 30 minutes of additional support. ‘Everyday Math’ includes flexible grouping to make sure all students grasp the daily objectives. Additionally, writing instruction is delivered through our Writers Workshop program, with a goal of helping students to become life-long writers. Services for English Language Learners are nationally recognized, and special education students receive a full range of services, including autism support. North End offers a safe, nurturing environment where students will learn and reach their maximum potential. Our school strongly encourages and welcomes parental involvement, and seeks partnerships with our students, families, and community to create a broad community improvement effect.
North End University Academies for Boys and Girls is an Achievement Plus School. Achievement Plus supports the Saint Paul Public Schools’ standards-based curriculum and offers extended learning opportunities that reinforce classroom progress, and provide learning supports that assist students and families. In addition to Achievement Plus the AVID program (Advancement Via Individual Determination) prepares our students for college in 4th through 6th grades. Student readiness will advance through important lessons in organization and note-taking skills. North End truly believes that it takes a village to raise a child, and community partners are aligned to assist at all levels.
As the principal, my goal for North End is to maintain a learning environment that is safe, nurturing, and equitable for all students. Our learners will receive the best education so as to enable them to meet and exceed the district and state standards. I will do everything possible to make myself available to students and their families whenever there is a need. I will also commit myself to creating and maintaining a caring environment for our future leaders.
