Reading and Literature The student will apply knowledge of the sounds of the English language (Phonemic awareness) and sound-symbol relationships (phonics).
October Benchmarks: Identify and name 14 upper case and 14 lower case letters of the alphabet; Identify rhyming words in response to an oral prompt; Hear the basic sounds (phonemes) of the English language; Use words to describe and name people, places and things; Use words to describe color and shape; Listen to and look at literature for personal enjoyment; Identify main characters and story events and actions; and Learn new words through explicit instruction.
Speaking and Listening The student will communicate effectively through listening and speaking.
October Benchmarks: Participate in and follow agreed-upon rules for conversation and formal discussions; Communicate needs, feeling and ideas to peers and adults; Recite and respond to poems, rhymes and songs; Use a voice leve appropriate for language situation; and Ask and respond to questions.
Viewing The student will become familiar with the structure of printed material.

Mathematical Reasoning Apply skills of mathematical representation, communication and reasoning.
Number Sense Represent quantities using whole numbers and understand relationships amoung whole numbers.
October Benchmarks: Compare lengths of two objects and use appropriate vocabulary such as longer than; Read numbers 1-10; and Count using one-to-one correspondence.
Patterns Sort, classify and compare objects based on their attributes. Understand simple repeating patterns.
